February Wildcats of the Month

Mia Hennum ’22, Jai Hunter ’21, Maggie Hodgson ’21, Siyang Wang ’20, Symir Torrence ’19

Congratulations to Vermont Academy's Wildcats of the Month, the key contributors to Vermont Academy's athletic and afternoon activities programs for February 2019.
Mia Hennum ’22
"Mia gave her all to the dance team in February. She was supportive of her teammates, and her respect for the instructors set an excellent example for the other dancers. She paid careful attention to technique, and she always pushed herself in practices. Her passion, talent, determination, and experience added much to the team, and her performance in the Winter Cabaret lit up the stage." - Amy Lanterman, Dance Team Instructor

Jai Hunter ’21
"Jai Hunter began his Freeski season very late (end of January) due to a November knee injury. He had a long road of rehab and then had the difficult task of not only catching up to where he left off last season, skill-wise, but of hopefully moving forward and progressing as well. Jai focused on “a little bit, every day” and took three podiums in USASA slopestyle, earning him a spot at National Championships in Colorado. But he will not be going, because he got a better offer... Snow Sports Australia (Australia’s governing body for ski competition) has invited Jai to represent his country at Junior World Championships in Klappen, Sweden this April. We wish Jai the best of luck and will be following his performance there." - Chris Marks, Head Coach, Freeski

Maggie Hodgson ’21
"Maggie had a great season with the Girl’s Hockey team serving as a key penalty killer and a spark of positive energy. In February the team went on a great winning streak and Maggie was a big part of that." - Chris Ardito, Head Coach, Girls’ Varsity Hockey

Siyang Wang ’20
"Siyang was critical to Robotics team success this season for some brilliant coding work done in creating the framework “Autonomous” programming code. This is where the robot has to function on its own during the competition. This was the most sophisticated work done by any team member ever! This is how Mr. Echanis describes Siyang’s contribution to the team: I didn’t fully understand how much he was playing a role in other areas until I watched his vocal and dance performances at the Cabaret before leaving for the competition that evening. Siyang didn’t get much sleep the night before the competition because we arrived at midnight and had to be out of the hotel by 6:30 am. From the time that we arrived at the competition at 7:00 am until 3:30 pm, he acted as the system as a programmer, driver, coach and made sure that the system was ready for each match. This was at the end of the second day of making programming adjustments all afternoon when he wasn’t at rehearsals for or performing as a member of the Vocal Ensemble and Dance Team. It is my pleasure to nominate Siyang Wang for the Wildcat of Month for his contributions to not just one team but for all that he does to entertain and support us all." - Joe Echanis, Robotics Instructor

Symir Torrence ’19
"Sy led the Wildcats to the NEPSAC AA semifinals and earned first-team all-new England along the way. Symir demonstrates what it means to be a Wildcat in every practice and every game. His approach was especially inspirational in the month of February for the Boys Varsity Basketball team!" - Alex Popp, Head Coach, Boys’ Varsity Basketball
