Arts at VA Performing Arts

The Vermont Academy Performing Arts Department strives to make the performing arts accessible to all, empowering students to become creative collaborators in hopes of enriching the community at large.

Throughout their time here, students can learn to sing in our Vocal Ensemble, pick up an instrument, or two, or three, in a private lesson or in our Chamber and/or Jazz Ensembles, be a part of the spring musical, choreograph and perform a dance routine, become a theater tech wizard, write and perform their own songs, and so much more. By having numerous opportunities within the music, theater, and dance programs, many of our students transform into seasoned performers, writers, directors, and technicians by their senior year.

Music

The Music Department at Vermont Academy is a thriving and growing set of programs that offer a diverse selection of musical activities for our students. Students participate in introductory to advanced classes, jazz, chamber, and/or vocal ensembles, private lessons, jam sessions, instrument building, electronic music, and recording projects with their peers and instructors. On an intimate campus, the presence of musicians at Vermont Academy is strong, and their performances are met with acclaim from their friends and families. Musicians perform in VA concerts throughout the entire year.

Theater

Vermont Academy Theater Arts provides production experiences each year and elective coursework. The season consists of a fall play, spring musical, the 24 Hour Play Festival, and, depending on the year, a student-generated piece. This multi-genre season offers the entire VA community to enjoy and learn from a well-rounded year of theater. Faculty strive to select shows that reflect who our students are and expose them to realities different from theirs. Coursework introduces students to theater, then, should the students choose, deepens their knowledge and skills in areas such as theater styles, acting, and theater technology. Theater technology is offered as an afternoon activity during the year where students aid in the production of our school concerts and performances.
Dance

Offered as an afternoon activity during the winter trimester, Vermont Academy’s Dance Team challenges each team member to take risks, improve their technique and performance ability, and build strength, stamina, and flexibility. Whether a student is a seasoned dancer or putting on their first pair of dance shoes, our coaches expect the same amount of discipline, teamwork, and effort while also accommodating to the different skill levels. Classes in jazz, tap, hip-hop, ballet, contemporary, and conditioning/flexibility are offered and dancers perform in both the Candlelight concert in December and in the Winter Performing Arts Night in February.
