Our teachers, staff, and administrators are innovative and possess excellent interpersonal skills, organizational abilities, and an enthusiasm for working with adolescents. They are a critical part of our residential life program, living in or serving as a dorm parent to one of the Academy’s dormitories.   • Director of Facilities

    Position Overview

    The Director of Facilities leads all aspects of the school’s physical plant and grounds. This role combines hands-on work with strong management of people, systems, and vendors. The Director evaluates and prioritizes work based on safety, operational continuity, cost, and long-term preservation of campus assets. Although not traditionally student-facing, the role directly supports the daily experience of students, faculty, and staff and requires a high standard of responsiveness, communication, and customer service.

    Reports to: Head of School
    Salary Range: $60,000–$75,000, commensurate with experience
    Schedule: Full-time with participation in an after-hours on-call rotation for maintenance emergencies

    Key Responsibilities
    Operational Leadership
    • Oversee daily operation, inspection, and upkeep of buildings, mechanical systems, grounds, and athletic facilities.
    • Manage preventive maintenance schedules, work orders, and emergency response.
    • Maintain a visible presence across campus to anticipate needs and assess conditions.
    Maintenance & Work-Order Oversight
    • Maintain strong oversight of the maintenance ticketing system:
      • Timely assignment, follow-up, and closure of tickets
      • Clear communication with faculty and staff on timelines and outcomes
      • Tracking and reporting of trends, recurring issues, and system-level needs
    • Perform hands-on repairs when appropriate and coordinate specialized contractors as needed.
    Vendor Management & Procurement
    • Build strong, reliable vendor relationships while maintaining multiple competitive options.
    • Evaluate vendor performance, pricing, responsiveness, and quality.
    • Develop scopes of work, solicit bids, and oversee contracted projects.
    • Maintain contracts, warranties, and service agreements with proper documentation.
    Capital Planning & Budget Stewardship
    • Evaluate requests and repairs with attention to short-term urgency and long-term asset care.
    • Prepare recommendations and cost estimates for capital projects and infrastructure needs.
    • Manage the facilities operating budget in coordination with the CFO/COO.
    • Contribute to long-range campus planning and asset life-cycle strategies.
    Team Management
    • Supervise, train, and support the facilities and grounds staff.
    • Set expectations, provide feedback, and ensure accountability for quality and safety.
    • Coordinate scheduling, daily assignments, and the after-hours on-call rotation.
    • Foster a professional, service-oriented culture within the team.
    Campus Safety & Compliance
    • Ensure compliance with building codes, inspections, fire/life safety requirements, and environmental regulations.
    • Partner with leadership on safety planning, emergency operations, and drill readiness.
    • Maintain records for inspections, regulatory compliance, and preventive maintenance.
    Grounds & Seasonal Operations
    • Oversee landscaping, road/trail maintenance, athletic field preparation, snow removal, and ice management.
    • Ensure effective care and maintenance of grounds equipment.
    Community, Service, and Communication
    • Respond to faculty and staff needs with clarity, professionalism, and follow-through.
    • Recognize that responsiveness and communication directly impact the student and faculty experience.
    • Support school events, athletics, weekend activities, and student-life operations as needed.
    • Communicate proactively about planned work that may affect classrooms, dorms, or schedules.
    Qualifications
    • 5–10+ years of facilities management, trades, or related operations experience.
    • Technical competency with building systems (HVAC, plumbing, electrical, carpentry, or general maintenance).
    • Experience managing staff and contractors.
    • Strong organizational and prioritization skills.
    • Budget management and capital planning experience preferred.
    • Ability to work hands-on and respond to emergencies, including after-hours.
    • Valid driver’s license; ability to perform physical work in varied conditions.

    Job Title: Mental Health Counselor
    Start Date: August 2026 (with immediate part-time available)
    Location: Saxtons River, Vermont
    Reports To: Director of Health Services

    Purpose: Provide comprehensive psychotherapeutic assessment, treatment, intervention, and monitoring for Vermont Academy students within the regulations set forth by the State licensing board, accepted standards of practice, and in cooperation with other health care providers.  

    Responsibilities:
    1. Interview, assess, and identify mental health, substance abuse/use, or other problems using approved/accepted instruments, history, and consultation with other sources as appropriate.
    2. Make appropriate recommendations relating to treatment options/plans, protecting the confidentiality of the student, and supporting his/her success within the VA community.
    3. Conduct individual, group, and/or family counseling sessions according to individual needs.
    4. Refer to/collaborate with other health care providers as appropriate.
    5. Create and maintain accurate records/documentation in a timely and appropriate manner.
    6. Serve as a resource person on mental health issues for faculty, staff, parents, students, and school administrators.
    7. Participate in Health Team to offer expertise on student-related issues.  
    8. Meet with families as appropriate to facilitate progress toward the goals of the student.
    9. Assist in the coordination of medical leaves related to mental health issues in accordance with the Medical Leave Policy and make recommendations to Health Team and administration in situations of medical leave or withdrawal from the Academy.
    10. Maintain competencies pertinent to mental health counseling through continuing education and staff development.
    11. Participate in the bi-weekly faculty meeting.

    Additional Expectations and Responsibilities: 
    1. Visit students in dormitories or other facilities within the community in emergency situations if needed to ensure student and/or community safety.  
    2. Participate in evening and weekend call schedule to meet the needs of the health center.
    3. Assist the Admissions department by reading all pertinent incoming student files and meeting  with prospective students and parents as needed
    4. Meeting with families, faculty, or administrators during evenings or weekends if needed for best support of students.
    5. Ability to maintain positive, cooperative working relationships.
    6. Maintain strict confidentiality of all student records.
    7. Participate in community-wide activities of the Academy to promote student relations.
    8. Participate in student review, faculty in-services, and staff development..
    9. Other job-related duties as assigned by the Director of Health Services.

    Minimum Education/Training requirements 
    1. BA/BS or Master's degree from an accredited program in mental health, social work, or counseling.  
    2. Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LICSW), Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC), with an additional preference for: Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor (LADC) or Certified Alcohol and Drug Addiction Counselor ( CADAC)
    3. Current valid license or certification to practice in the State of Vermont.
    4. Previous experience working with adolescents.

    Job Title: Part-time Clinic Staff Nurse
    Reports To: Director of Health Services

    Overview: We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate part-time or per diem Registered Nurse to join our Health Services team. You will work collaboratively with a team of nurses, counseling staff, and athletic training staff to support the well-being of Vermont Academy students. The nurse plays a vital role in promoting the health and well-being of students, ensuring a safe and supportive environment conducive to learning.

    Duties:
    ● Utilizing the nursing process, identifies actual and potential health issues and provides health care and health education to students in accordance with Health Services’ policies and procedures, Vermont Academy regulations, and the scope of practice of a licensed nurse in the State of Vermont.
    ● Accurately documents care provided to students in the medical record in a timely manner.
    ● Accurately administers treatments and medications as appropriate following standing orders, accepted protocol, and/or physician’s orders.
    ● Cooperates with school personnel and other health care providers in identifying and meeting social, emotional, and physical needs of students.
    ● Provides information to students, families, and school personnel regarding health and safety issues.
    ● Assists in the control of communicable diseases on campus, including the use of preventive measures such as hand washing and universal precautions as warranted.
    ● Serves as an advocate for students in health related matters and functions as a liaison between school, families, other health care providers, and regulatory agencies on the student’s behalf as needed.
    ● Communicates effectively with peers, students, parents, and members of school community.
    ● Maintains competencies pertinent to school health nursing through continuing education and staff development.
    ● Maintains positive, supportive, empathic attitude and atmosphere within health clinic.

    Additional Responsibilities and Expectations:
    ● Visits students in dormitories or other facilities if needed to ensure student and/or community health and safety.
    ● Demonstrates flexibility in work schedule to meet needs of health clinic, including participating in evening hours and the on-call schedule.
    ● Participates in registrationactivities as assigned by the Director.
    ● Exhibits competency and/or a willingness to learn electronic student health information management system.
    ● Works collaboratively with mental health counselors and athletic trainers.

    Experience:
    ● Graduate of an accredited Bachelor of Science program with minimum of 3 years experience in adolescent nursing, or graduate of an accredited Associate or Diploma Nursing program with 5 years or more of experience in adolescent nursing and strong recommendations.
    ● Current valid RN license in the State of Vermont.
    ● Current certification in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation as a Health Care Provider.
    ● Previous experience in school nursing, emergency medicine practices, or urgent care is highly desirable.

    Job Title: Head Athletic Trainer
    Reports To: Director of Health Services

    Position Summary: Vermont Academy seeks a full-time certified, enthusiastic, and knowledgeable Athletic Trainer to join our healthcare team. As a member of our Health Services and Athletic Departments, the certified Athletic Trainer will work with the sports medicine team in the planning, organization, direction, and execution of programs and procedures associated with the care and prevention of orthopedic injuries and management of other injuries and illnesses that impact our students’ health and wellness. Primary duties include supporting the school throughout the school year, including some school vacations and pre-season.

    Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
    ● Assist in establishing and enforcing departmental policies, procedures, and guidelines.
    ● Provide education and serve as a resource on injury/illness prevention and wellness.
    ● Assist in providing training for faculty and staff on campus emergency procedures.
    ● Provide comprehensive athletic training care to our student-athletes, including injury prevention, evaluation, treatment, rehabilitation, and emergency care.
    ● Maintain respectful communication, within the limits of confidentiality, between coaches, parents/guardians, medical professionals, Athletic Director, and nursing staff regarding student health matters.
    ● Provide coverage for athletic contests, practice sessions, and Athletic Training clinic from the beginning of the fall sports season to the end of the spring season.
    ● Maintain complete and accurate records of Athletic Training Clinic activities and pertinent medical data.
    ● Assist in administering and reviewing our Concussion Care Program.
    ● Know rules, regulations, and best practices of sports governing bodies (ie NCAA, NFHS, NEPSAC) and state statutes and maintain, review, and practice them to ensure compliance.

    Education/Certifications and Experience
    ● A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree; Master’s degree preferred
    ● BOC certified
    ● VT state Athletic Training licensure or ability to attain before August 2025
    ● CPR/AED/First Aid, instructor certification preferred
    ● Ideally 3-5 years of experience working with student athletes, college or high school athletic training experience preferred
    ● Certification or strong background in strength and conditioning is preferred
