"Leaving your comfort zone feels comfortable"

A Q&A with Zoee Blossom '19
How did you choose Vermont Academy?

I was looking at schools in the area, because my family had recently moved to Vermont, and I fell in love with the open, friendly people on campus and appreciated the school’s focus on strong community.

Why is Vermont Academy special to you?

I think this school is special because you have so many options and a strong support system to pursue any of them. I see my advisor as a second parent, and I know that she and many of my teachers will help me in any way that they can. The school allows you to explore different sports, arts, and classes that you may not have thought to ever take, and if there is a class missing, the independent studies program allows you to go after that subject. I think VA kids are more likely to go out of their comfort zone and try new things because through our supportive community, leaving your comfort zone feels comfortable.

Who is your favorite teacher at VA and why?

I have many teachers that I adore and see as role models in my life. Ms. Frey is so willing to go out of her way to help anyone, and Mr. Collins is so sure of himself and is able to translate that through his coaching into his athletes. But my favorite teacher would be Ms. McNealus mainly because I know her so well. She is my advisor, head of the art department, has been my coach, and is my teacher. She is a wonderful, supportive person and is always looking for a way for me to get more involved, to push myself further, and to better myself as a student and artist.

What has been your favorite class at VA and why?

Of course, I’ve loved the art courses I’ve taken, but AP French is my favorite class that I’ve taken so far. I loved how small and intimate the group was and I adored the teacher both as a person and educator.

What have you accomplished in your time at VA with the arts?

So far at VA I have taken three art classes at various levels, but from that, I have been able to dramatically expand my confidence, skills, and portfolio. I have sent work to multiple shows both in state and out and sold paintings, drawings, and sculptures through the school and through my involvement in galleries. I have definitely expanded my skills and feel much more prepared to go into the college process with a strong portfolio. I’ve gotten involved in the theatre program, and have also expanded my writing skills.

How is your AP art class? What does your final project consist of?

My AP class is very small, which makes it that much better. Our final project is a culmination of everything we’ve done all year. We pick our five best pieces and mail them to the AP board, and send 12 pieces that show our range of approaches and media, as well as 12 pieces focused on one concentration. Working with a small group on these projects has made it easy to get honest critiques and grow independently while feeling supported.

What are you passionate about?

In general, I’m passionate about creating. Writing, painting, drawing, and everything between and beyond I find to be an amazing part of being alive. My family is all very artistic, and because of VA I’ve learned the importance of art in our society. Most people don’t notice how important creativity and design are to our daily lives, but it’s a vital aspect. I hope to pursue that and keep creating throughout my life.

What are your future plans?

I’m planning on applying to art schools and artistically strong liberal arts schools to further my study of art. I want to pursue a career that centers around creating and designing so that I can keep following my passion.
