Wildcats Edge Out Highlanders

The Wildcats traveled down to The Gunnery School in Washington, CT for a 4:30 puck drop against the Highlanders. Blanka Skodova ‘18 earned the start in net, her fifteenth of the season. Vermont has gone 1-0-1 against The Gunnery this season.

The Wildcats came out strong in the first period. Only two minutes into the game Lotti Odnoga ‘18 picked off a Highlander breakout pass went in and beat the goalie under her blocker. Vermont kept the momentum rolling adding another goal four minutes later. Chloe Aurard ‘18 got the goal assisted by Kristyna Kaltounkova ‘20 and Odnoga.

The second period both teams battled unable to put anything in the back of the net.

The third period opened with The Gunnery getting a quick goal within the first minute. However, the Wildcats responded five minutes later. Odnoga added another picking up a loose puck that slid off of Maddie Paydos ‘18 stick, skating into the offensive zone and beating the goalie again. The Highlanders would storm back scoring two unanswered goals in the remainder of the third period. Unable to respond on their senior night the Wildcats and Highlanders headed into overtime.

Overtime was a back and forth battle until Odnoga completed her hat trick with less than a minute left. She picked up a loose puck at center ice beat a defender wide and shot top far corner to give the Wildcats the win.

The Wildcats are now 3-0-1 in overtime this season. Skodova had 24 saves and Odnoga finished the night with four points. Klara Jandusikova ‘20 and Jordan Loya’s ‘20 contributions in the defensive zone helped the Wildcats edge the Highlanders.

Vermont is back in action on Friday, February 16th at Kimball Union for a 6:30 pm game.
