Special Teams Push VA Past Groton

VA traveled down to the Groton School for a 4:00 pm matchup with the Zebras. Blanka Skodova ‘18 earned the start in net her tenth of the season.

The Wildcats came out strong in the first period against a tough Groton team. Vermont had some scoring opportunities but was not able to capitalize.

The second period the Wildcats special teams went to work. Vermont was able to score on the power play three minutes into the period. VA maintained control in the offensive zone by successfully moving the puck around. Lotti Odnoga ’18 received a pass from Chloe Aurard ’18 at the point and fired a slap shot over the goalie's shoulder, for her sixth goal in the past five games.

Skodova shut down the Groton offense in the third period turning away all twelve shots that she faced. This allowed the Wildcats to go on the attack. Kristyna Kaltounkova ’20 scored a shorthanded goal halfway into the period beating the goalie under the glove. In the last minute of the period, Holly Meredith ’18 sealed the deal with an empty net goal, her first of the season.

The VA penalty kill went nine for nine, and Skodova had 30 saves to secure her 3rd shutout of the season. Meredith received the game puck after the game for her consistency on defense and the empty net goal.

Next week Vermont will travel to Phillips Exeter Academy on Wednesday, January 24th to play Hebron Academy, puck drop is slated for 4:30 pm.
