Four Goal First Lifts VA Over KUA

Vermont traveled north to face off with Kimball Union in a big Lakes Region matchup with playoff implications. Puck drop was at 4:30 p.m. in Meriden, New Hampshire.

In the first period, Vermont responded quickly to a Kimball Union goal four minutes into the game. Vermont scored four goals within a two and a half minute stretch to go up 4-1 heading into the second period.

1st-period scoring:

  1. Brooks ’23 from Kaltounkova ’20 and Walsh ’22
  2. Creamer ’21 from Kaltounkova ’20 and Sujishi ’22
  3. D. McCarthy ’22 from Hodgson ’21 and Small ’23
  4. Kaltounkova ’20 from Sujishi ’22

The second period was sprinkled with special teams for both KUA and Vermont. Both teams with 5 v. 3 opportunities. Kimball Union was able to capitalize on their power play to cut the lead to two. In the third period Kimball Union came out pushing, however, Vermont played solid D blocking shots. Paquin ’22 came up big in net stopping 22 of the 24 shots she faced. Kaltounkova ’20 added an insurance goal with two minutes left in the game off of a feed from Walsh ’22 and Wood ’20. 

The Wildcats are back in action on Saturday, February 22 at home for their Senior Night vs. Portsmouth Abbey. Puck drop is at 6:30 p.m. The seven seniors will be recognized for their accomplishments and contributions to the program.
