On Wednesday afternoon the Wildcats traveled to The Gunnery in Washington, Connecticut for a 4:30 p.m. game. The last match between the Highlanders and the Wildcats the Highlanders won 5-2 earlier this season.
The Wildcats looked to avenge the earlier loss. They came out fast after the three-hour bus ride and were able to score the first goal from Kaltounkova ’20 on the power play with assists from D. McCarthy ’22 and Fortier ’21. The Highlanders responded less than a minute later to tie the game at one. However, the Wildcats went back to work and added a second before the period was over. It was a Kalounkova ’20 goal and a Brooks ’23 assist. With this goal, Kaltounkova ’20 recorded her 220th career point becoming Vermont Academy’s all-time leading in points surpassing Chloe Aurard ’18 (219 points). Earlier this season she broke Aurard’s record for most goals at 136.
In the second period, both goalies stood tall, allowing no goals. In the third Creamer ’21 increased Vermont’s lead with a scrappy goal in front Kaltounkova ’20 and Walsh ’22 were credited with the assists. With less than a minute to go in the game Kaltounkova ’20 added an empty-net goal to ensure the Vermont win.
Paquin ’22 had 31 saves in net for Vermont. On Friday the Wildcats travel north to face off with KUA in a 4:30 Lakes Region matchup.
