Vermont Academy boys' hockey team traveled down Interstate 91 today to play Williston Northampton School at 4:30 pm at Williston's home arena. Both teams played well but in the end it was the home team walking away with a 4-1 win.
Vermont's Max McLaughlin '16 (Westmoreland, NH) started the scoring just 1:44 in to the game off a sharp backhand pass from Houston Wilson '16 (Philadelphia, PA). Wilson would receive a cross ice pass from Nathan Smith '17 (Wildwood, MO) in their defensive zone and streak down the wing taking the Williston defenseman wide and around the net as McLaughlin came down the slot, Wilson zipped the back hand pass across for a one timer that found the back of the net.
Williston would bounce back just two minutes later when Sam Milnes banged home a rebound past Josh Bolding '16 (Calgary, Alberta). Bolding would make the first save but Williston was able to get a second chance and Milnes made no mistakes finding the back of the net. Williston would take the lead seven minutes later when Jack Kelly would one time a loose puck off an in zone face off. The first period would finish with Williston leading 2-1.
After 17 minutes of back and forth hockey Williston would increase their lead to 3-1 off of Nick Schofield's stick. Williston would take their 3-1 lead in to the Third period.
Just like much of the game Vermont would test Williston's goaltender, Shane Mason, but they could not break him. But Williston would take advantage of a Vermont miscue by blocking a shot, Brendan White jumping on the loose puck and beating Bolding on the breakaway to again increase their lead to 4-1 which would be the final score.
Williston's Mason would take home the victory by stopping 30 of 31 shots while Bolding would stop 31 of 35 in the loss.
Vermont (7-12-2 overall, 0-6-1 Lakes Region) will head out on the road again this Friday to New Hampton in a Lakes Region matchup in a 4:00 pm game.
