Cushing Outlasts Vermont

Despite a great team performance, Vermont Academy lost a close match to Cushing Academy.
Despite a great team performance, Vermont Academy lost a close match to Cushing Academy. The Penguins opened the scoring in the 39' minute. The goal came from a free kick about 25 yards out. Vermont Academy answered back immediately scoring the equalizer in the 40' minute. Rodrigo Rodrigues broke in behind the Cushing backline before centering the ball to Lucas Calvo Fernandez to notch his second in as many games. The Wildcats pressed hard for another before half, but were unsuccessful.

The second half was much of the same. Both teams sustained long bits of possession and equally good goalkeeping. Pat Lavin came up with a great diving save to thwart a Cushing free kick destined for the upper corner. Cushing remained dangerous on their set pieces all afternoon. Eventually, the Wildcats conceded the game winner from knuckling free kick from 30 yards out in the 67' minute. In VA's efforts to find the equalizer, they were left vulnerable at the back. The Wildcats conceded again in the 80' minute from a strong piece of counter attacking play. Vermont Academy displayed many positives despite the scoreline. The Wildcats continue their Lakes Region play this Saturday, October, 17th at home against Holderness School.
