Alana Lopez '15 and fellow alumni of color from five other northern New England independent schools will come together for a discussion about finding belonging at independent schools and beyond. Following the panel discussion, attendees will be invited to participate in optional speed networking.

Eleanor Brown | Cardigan Mountain School Parent | Penn State University Professor of Law and International Affairs
Eleanor Brown is a Professor of Law and International Affairs at Penn State University and a Jamaican, Canadian, and American national, who has served on the boards of several publicly traded Caribbean companies. She was appointed by the Honorable Andrew Holness, Prime Minister of Jamaica, to the Commission on Educational Transformation in 2020, and the CARICOM Commission on the Economy in 2016. Eleanor is interested in immigration and property law, with a particular focus on emerging markets and capital market development in emerging economies. 

Eleanor also founded DiversiBoard to change the way the tech recruiting industry operates amid high diversity awareness and severe engineer shortages. 

Eleanor was previously the youngest director of JPSCo, the electric utility owned by Korea East West Power, Marubeni Corp. of Japan, and the government of Jamaica. She chaired the Pension Fund Subcommittee of the board. Eleanor was also an external board member of Caribiz, an association of Caribbean alumnae and students of Harvard Business School and the Wharton School. She holds a Bachelors in molecular biology from Brown University and 
a Masters in Politics from Oxford, where she was Rhodes Scholar. She earned her J.D. from Yale.

  • Alana Lopez ‘15 | Vermont Academy | Mental Health Caregiver & Puerto Rico’s National Women’s Hockey Team Assistant Captain
    Alana works at Riveredge Hospital as a mental health caregiver and is the assistant captain of Team Puerto Rico's National Ice Hockey Team. She graduated from Post University in 2019 with a bachelor's degree in psychology and will be enrolled in nursing school in the fall of 2023. Alana volunteers for the American Heart Association and local food banks. 

    Originally from Connecticut, she played on Vermont Academy’s varsity ice hockey team before playing one year of NCAA Division III and three years of NCAA Division I at Post University. Alana is a member of the Professional Women's Hockey Players Association. 

  • Charles Callaway ‘85 | Proctor Academy | Environmental Justice and Policy
    As the Director of Workforce Development at WE ACT for Environmental Justice, Charles taps into his many years of working with and leading empowerment programs throughout Harlem. At WE ACT, he has recruited and trained more than 2,000 people in 30 hours of OSHA and 32 hours of asbestos handling classes along with more than 100 certified solar installers. As a result of this, more than 200 now have jobs, including 138 community members working in the construction field 78 in the solar industry. Charles has also been instrumental in developing a solar workers cooperative, SUNS: Solar Uptown Now Services, with his solar trainees, and they have installed 14 megawatts of solar power to date. Charles previously served as WE ACT’s Director of Organizing, playing a key role in organizing residents around significant issues in the community and helping them understand the importance of advocating on its own behalf. He worked with Harlem residents on the Columbia University expansion and 125th Street rezoning. Charles also worked with the Mother Clara Hale Community Taskforce and the MTA to build the first green bus depot in Harlem.

  • Fatimata Cham ‘19 | The White Mountain School | Human Rights and Social Justice
    Award winning activist, published poet, and gender equality advocate, Fatimata Cham is originally from the Bronx, New York. She is 21 years old, a first-generation Gambian college student, and is a double major in Government and Law and Women and Gender studies at Lafayette college. She is also a 2022 Truman Scholar, 2019 Coca Cola Scholar and former Girl Up teen advisor to the United Nations Foundation. Fatimata is passionate about advocating for her community and does so through her writing. While attending The White Mountain School, Fatimata published a short book of poetry titled Perfectly Imperfect. She uses the intersection between poetry and activism to talk about issues related to environmental injustice, gender inequity, racism, Islamophobia, and a plethora of issues about which she is passionate. At Lafayette College, she is also president of her Girls Up, Vice-President of Student Government, a kaleidoscope social justice peer educator, McKelvy Scholar, and a three-time Aaron O. Hoff award winner. Recently, she was cast in Dear Season 2 on Apple TV alongside Malala Yousfzai. She hopes to build a more just and equitable world through her work.

  • Tyson Laa Deng '13 | Dublin School | Software Engineer
    Tyson Laa Deng is a Cybersecurity engineer for PayPal, with an extensive history of working in the I.T., music, and entertainment industries. Tyson received his B.A. in liberal arts - with a concentration in social and behavioral sciences - from Soka University of America, CA. He also received an M.S. in Information Technology from SNHU and is currently pursuing an MBA from Quantic School of Business. In addition, Tyson is a member of the board of trustees at Dublin, and a member of the HackerOne technical advisory board.  When not occupied with work or school, Tyson likes to play and write music (classical & jazz), take photos (portraits/ nature/candid), and play sports (soccer/ running track).

  • Don Lowery ‘73 | Kimball Union Academy | Public Affairs
    Highly experienced leader with demonstrated accomplishment in managing government, public affairs and communications operations for leading, high-profile national and global enterprises in consumer and marketing research, media and sports. Leader of senior management teams in developing and executing corporate reputation, government, media and public affairs maser and strategic plans. Spokesperson for corporations in dealing with media, government, civic and special interest groups.
