Julianna Carey Cartwright ’09, Nurse

Quick update about your life after VA

After graduating from Vermont Academy in 2009, I returned to the Bahamas and started my nursing degree at The College of the Bahamas, now the University of the Bahamas in fall 2010 on a part-time basis. I finished my degree, a bachelor of science in nursing, in the fall of 2017.

What is your official job/title?

I am a registered nurse working in the Bahamas.

How has the job changed and/or shifted during the pandemic?

In the Bahamas, we currently are at 60 cases and 9 deaths which may not seem like a lot, but it is compared to the size of our country. The schools have been closed since March 14th. Only essential workers go to work and grocery shops are open from 6 a.m. until 7 p.m. On the weekend's everyone is on complete lockdown.

It is nerve-wracking sometimes because I have a 6-year-old and a 9-month-old at home and I am always worried about bringing the virus home to them. I have also taken this time to develop new skills such as baking and cooking new dishes for my family.

How can VA alumni and the greater VA community help you and other healthcare professionals?

The community can help the health care workers by staying at home unless you need to go out for essential or emergency purposes. Also, if you do go outside make sure to practice social distancing and wear masks. You can reduce your risk of getting the virus by frequently washing your hands and using proper coughing hygiene, by sneezing or coughing into your elbow and avoiding touching your face as much as possible.
