Roger Stevens Young, age 77, passed away on August 21, 2016, surrounded by his loving family at the University of Vermont Medical Center.
Roger was born in Rutland on April 22, 1939. He was the son of Robert and Margery (Plue) Young. He grew up in Orwell, where he received his early education, and graduated from Vermont Academy. He attended Norwich University and the University of Vermont. Roger worked for the town of Middlebury as their mechanic for 22 years, retiring in 2001. Roger was very active with the Vermont Fire Service, beginning with the Orwell Fire Department. He joined the Middlebury Fire Department in 1962, where he served as chief from 1987 until 1996. He served as vice president and president of the Addison County Firefighters Association and was a past member of the Vermont Fire Chief's Association. He served as treasurer of the Vermont State Firefighters Association for 20 years, retiring in 2015. He served as fire warden in Middlebury for 15 years. He was a life member of the Middlebury Fire Department, Addison County Firefighters Association and Vermont State Firefighters Association. At the time of his death, he continued to play a role in the Orwell Fire Department as an active member. Roger spent over 60 years of his life dedicated to the fire service. He was named VSFA Senior Firefighter of the year in 2015 and was runner up for Firefighter of the Year in 2001. In addition to his firefighting service, Roger was on the board of directors for the First National Bank of Orwell and was a member of Independence Lodge #10 in Orwell. Roger was an avid deer hunter, spending time with his brothers, nephews and son-in-law. He especially enjoyed taking hunting trips to Anticosti Island in Canada in later years. He also enjoyed his twice yearly trips to Maine for his "seafood fix." Roger loved the water and spent many hours during his younger years on Lake Hortonia with his family. In recent years, he loved spending time with his wife, Dale, on their boat on Lake Champlain, spending his last day with family and dear friends. He was an amazing grandfather and was incredibly proud of his 7 grandchildren. He loved attending sporting and music events, watching the many talents of his grandchildren. He was their biggest fan and was always ready with a huge hug and that amazing smile that we will always remember. Roger is survived by his loving wife, Dale (Knott) Young, whom he married at the Middlebury Congregational Church on September 24, 1960; three daughters: Elizabeth Betsy Wines and her husband, John, Christine "Christy" Brigante and her husband, Dan, and Kimberly "Kim" Betourney and her husband, Keith; 7 grandchildren: Megan and Sean Wines; Matthew, Amanda and Daniel Brigante; and Lauren and Travis Betourney; and his fiancé, Casey Mathers; his brothers Robert and his wife, Kathryn, Peter and his wife, Barbara, Mark and his wife, Susan; and sister-in-law, Jane Burton, and her husband, Peter; as well as many nieces and nephews. Roger was predeceased by his parents; a brother, Bruce, and his wife, Rosalind, and infant daughter, Cheryl. The memorial service "In Celebration of His Life" will be held on Friday, August 26, 2016, at 10 a.m. at the First Congregational Church in Orwell. The Rev. David Anderson, pastor, will officiate. The graveside committal service and burial, with Firefighter Honors, will follow in the family lot at Mountain View Cemetery in Orwell. Following the ceremony, the family will receive friends at the Orwell Fire Station for a time of remembrance.
