Smith And Tummings Find The Back Of The Net But It Proves Not To Be Enough
Vermont Academy boys' hockey team hosted Williston Northampton today for the "Battle Of I91" at Choukas Arena on the Hilltop.
Williston struck first just 1:12 in to the game when Brendan White shot one past Vermont goaltender Guy Piccolo '17 (Fairfield, CT). Vermont would bounce back to tie it at one when Tyus Watson-Tummings '17 (Montreal, QUE) drove the net and deflected a great pass from sophomore Mason Cipriano '19 (Wolcott, CT). The rest of the period was back and forth but it finished in a one to ne tie.
Williston would fins the back of the net two times in the period with the goals being 1:58 a part. Jojo Carbone and Connor Power would be the lucky Williston goal scored to take the lead for good.
Williston would add an insurance goal two minutes in to the third period when Brendan Hansen would take the score to 4-1. Vermont responded well and tried to shrink Williston's lead. Jake Meikle '18 (Toronto, ONT) put a heavy slap shot on net and the puck jumped up in the air. Nathan Smith '18 (Wildwood, MO) saw the puck in the air. Smith drove the net and dove the net to bat it out of the air while diving toward the puck. That is as close as the score would get as Williston would add two more goals off the sticks of JT Chamberlain and Steven Townley.
Williston's Xander Rogers would face 42 shots for the win while Piccolo faced 33. Both goalies played great.
Vermont (11-8-1 overall, 1-5-1 Lakes Region will be hosting Lakes Region rival New Hampton on Friday, January 20 at 5:00 pm at Choukas Arena.
