The joke is, Everyone Gets Eaten by Sharks

Everyone Gets Eaten by Sharks written by Marshall Pailet is a comedic, fast-paced play that parodies survival thrillers and disaster dramas. The story guides us through many scenarios in which you come to the same conclusion, everyone gets eaten by sharks. Our two narrators, a Crocodile Dundee of sorts (Asper Donath ‘26) and his unlikely companion on this journey, Sweet Bonnie (Gaby Clavel ‘27), a young girl with perfect comedic timing. Through every scene, we are put in many situations, only for everything to go spectacularly, hilariously wrong.
The cast includes the ever-optimistic tour guide, a sarcastic and witty youngster, a suspiciously airheaded mad scientist, genetically modified sharks, musical pirates, a bickering couple with meat paddles, a cold blooded surgeon, and several unlucky and hormonal high schoolers who quickly realize they’re in too deep. There were a few cameos that Vermont Academy faculty had the pleasure of taking part in such a dynamic production. Directorial praise goes to the director, Marty Hennum P ’20, ’22, who came out of retirement to direct this production with a revitalized vision that electrified the entire stage.

The group’s attempts to survive become more ridiculous with each scene, from misguided motivational speeches to improvised weapons that fail immediately. The genetically modified sharks, meanwhile, seem to have perfect timing.

True to its title, no one makes it out alive. The final moments include a dramatic monologue cut short by one last shark attack, ending the play with a wink at the audience. The result is a satirical, slapstick commentary on disaster-movie tropes, human overconfidence, and the eternal truth that nature (and comedy) always wins.

Congratulations to the cast and crew for an incredibly well done production. The stage was perfectly simple with the cast being the focal point for the absurdities. The laughing from the audience was almost as constant as the jokes on stage. We are looking forward to the next production in the Spring of 2026, eagerly awaiting a sequel to the madness.
