Vermont Academy is thrilled to announce the appointment of Patrick Ewing Jr. as the new Head Coach of Boys' Prep Basketball.
A former NBA player, NCAA Final Four standout, and accomplished professional coach, Ewing brings an extraordinary wealth of basketball knowledge, experience, leadership, and a deep understanding of what it takes to compete at the highest levels of the game.
Ewing played at Indiana University and Georgetown, where he helped lead the Hoyas to the 2007 NCAA Final Four and earned the BIG EAST Sixth Man of the Year award in 2008. Selected in the second round of the 2008 NBA Draft by the Sacramento Kings, Ewing went on to pursue a professional playing career that included time in the NBA Development League and international basketball.
Following his playing career, Ewing transitioned into coaching and basketball leadership. His experience includes serving as Director of Basketball Operations at Georgetown, Head Coach and General Manager of the Newfoundland Growlers in the Canadian Elite Basketball League, and coaching positions in Australia's professional basketball system.
The son of NBA Hall of Famer Patrick Ewing, he has built his own impressive career through his commitment to the game, player development, and leadership.
Head of School, Mike Peller remarked, “What impressed me most about meeting Patrick was not his past playing and coaching experiences, which are of course remarkably impressive. Rather, the way in which Patrick spoke about mentoring players to be great community members and the way in which Patrick spoke of his role as a father made it clear that he will bring so much more than just basketball acumen. At VA, we focus on human, student, athlete/performer, in that order. And Patrick clearly embodies that. It clearly is a great moment for VA basketball.”
His arrival represents an exciting new chapter for Vermont Academy basketball. Ewing brings invaluable experience, a global basketball perspective, and a passion for helping young athletes develop the skills, discipline, and confidence necessary to succeed at the collegiate level and beyond.
“From the moment Patrick stepped on campus, there was a genuine connection to Vermont Academy and what makes our community so special,” said Director of Athletics Karen Henry. “His basketball experience speaks for itself, but what impressed us most was his character, his passion for developing young people, and his vision for our program. We care deeply about these young men and their experience here, and we truly believe Patrick is the right person to lead this next chapter of Vermont Academy basketball. We couldn't be more excited about what lies ahead.”
Beyond the basketball court, Patrick is a devoted husband and father of four. He and his wife, Katie, along with their children, will be welcomed into the Vermont Academy community, where relationships, family, and a shared commitment to young people are at the heart of the school experience.
We are incredibly excited about the future of our Boys' Prep Basketball program and the opportunities ahead for our student-athletes.
Please join us in welcoming Coach Patrick Ewing Jr., his wife Katie, and their four children to the Wildcat family!
