Welcoming Back Jo Fuller as the Director of the Center for Teaching and Learning

Vermont Academy is thrilled to announce that Jo Fuller will return to campus as the school’s next Director of the Center for Teaching and Learning, bringing with her a profound understanding of the Vermont Academy community, decades of educational leadership experience, and an unwavering commitment to helping students and teachers thrive.
Jo is a familiar and deeply respected member of the Vermont Academy community. During her previous tenure at the school from 2012 to 2021, she served as an English teacher, Director of the Writing Center, and English Department Chair. In those roles, she became known not only as an exceptional teacher, but as a thoughtful academic leader who elevated the culture of teaching and learning across campus. She revived the school’s literary magazine, expanded Writing and Speaking Across the Curriculum initiatives, organized Poetry Out Loud competitions, mentored student tutors, and helped students discover confidence and voice through writing. In recognition of her impact in the classroom, she received the Brodine Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2015.

Jo brings more than 26 years of experience across public and independent schools in three states. Most recently, she served at Putnam Science Academy as an English teacher, Curriculum Coordinator, and Dean of Academics, where she supervised faculty, revised academic policies, strengthened curriculum systems, and helped launch a college counseling program.

Throughout the search process, faculty, staff, and students consistently emphasized Jo’s deep understanding of Vermont Academy and the type of student-centered learning environment the school strives to create. Committee members praised her “mission-aligned leadership,” her ability to balance “faculty accountability, coherence, and appropriate flexibility,” and her strong relationships with students and colleagues alike. Others highlighted her ability to pair institutional knowledge with fresh perspective, noting that she understands both the traditions of Vermont Academy and the opportunities ahead.

In addition to her school leadership experience, Jo has served as an AP Literature and Composition exam reader and has taught at Landmark College, experiences that further deepened her expertise in literacy instruction, differentiated learning, and student support. She earned her BA from Vermont College of Norwich University and is currently completing a Master of Education in Global Perspectives in Teaching, Curriculum, and Learning Environments from Boston College.

As Director of the Center for Teaching and Learning, Jo will help strengthen Vermont Academy’s systems of academic support, instructional coaching, and faculty collaboration. Her work will play an important role in advancing the school’s commitment to healthy excellence and ensuring that students are both challenged and supported as learners.

“Jo understands Vermont Academy not simply as a school, but as a community built through relationships, trust, and thoughtful teaching,” said Mike Peller, Head of School. “She brings warmth, wisdom, credibility, and deep care for both students and faculty. Just as importantly, she understands how to move a school forward thoughtfully — honoring what makes Vermont Academy special while helping us continue evolving toward the future we aspire to create.”

Jo and her husband are the proud parents of two daughters and a granddaughter. Their daughter Miranda graduated from Vermont Academy in 2019.

Vermont Academy looks forward to welcoming Jo back to Saxtons River and to the leadership, insight, and care she will bring to this important work.
