• Health Services

  Health Services and Infirmary
  A student’s well-being is essential for effective learning and is uppermost in the mind of the Vermont Academy community. Our on-campus infirmary is staffed by registered nurses 24 hours/day. The infirmary is open during the class day, until 9:00 pm on weeknights, and as needed after hours. Counseling services are offered by a licensed mental health counselor and certified alcohol and drug counselor on staff. Certified athletic training services are offered for practices, games, evaluation, and rehabilitation. On-site weekly primary care clinics are staffed by our medical directors. Monthly on-site psychiatric services are available.

• Effort Marks

  Effort marks are crucial to a student's success at Vermont Academy. They serve as an indication of whether a student is working to his or her potential. All advisors receive their advisee’s effort marks on a bi-weekly basis. The advisor discusses the marks with each advisee, and the reports are compiled to keep track of trends. If there is an area of concern, the advisor will seek out the teacher, coach, or dorm parent to discuss the situation and find out how the student could improve. Effort marks are available to parents on line.

• Course Selection

  Each spring, advisors meet with their advisees individually to discuss appropriate course selections for the upcoming school year. Advisors help students keep track of the academic credits necessary to graduate and to choose courses at the correct level. Parents receive a copy of the course selections for approval.

• Advisory/Class Deans

  Advisors
  The basis of student support at Vermont Academy is the advising system. In addition to providing academic guidance, faculty advisors also mentor, motivate and advocate for their advisees. Students meet with their advisors 4-5 times per week. If a student has a problem, his or her advisor is usually in the best position to direct the student to the appropriate support person. If a teacher, coach or dorm parent has concerns about a student, the advisor is the first line of communication. The advisor is also the direct link from Vermont Academy to the parents.
  
  

  Class Deans
  Every faculty advisor works with a small group of students who are all in the same grade. All of the advisors for a given grade level meet weekly with their Class Dean. The Class Deans oversee all academic and social concerns for their grade, and they are the link between the advisors and the Head of School.

• Dormitories

  Each dormitory is supervised by dorm parents, who help create a “home-away-from-home” atmosphere. All dorms are locked at 10:30 p.m. and a night watchman patrols the campus after hours. Vermont is one of the safest states in the country and offers a bucolic setting perfect for both study and enjoyment.
  

   

  A balanced mind and body are the cornerstones of academic achievement. At Vermont Academy, we pride ourselves on the strong connections we forge with our students and the many opportunities we offer them as they work and play.
  
  

  In each dormitory, dorm parents strive to create a comfortable, relaxed atmosphere while providing essential guidance and supervision. They are readily available for extra academic help, confidential chats about life's challenges, baking cookies, or maybe taking the group to the local pizza parlor or ice cream store. Advisors work closely with students and parents to keep the lines of communication open, resolve conflicts and questions, and help students maintain academic focus.

• Parent Communication

  Parents and advisors communicate as frequently as both deem necessary. Parents will be contacted by their student’s advisor within the first few weeks of school to become acquainted and discuss any issues of concern to the parent.

• Outdoors and Activities

  Our students embrace the Vermont outdoors and physical activity and have fun together in a close-knit, supportive community. We offer a freshman support group each fall to help 9th graders adjust to life away from home. Class camping trips offer an early opportunity to bond with classmates and faculty, and campus activities ranging from yoga to rock climbing help reduce stress throughout the year.
