Davon Johnson '20 Commits to Play Lacrosse at University of Albany

College Commitment Q&A with Davon '20
Davon Johnson ’20
Hometown: New York, NY
Position: Midfield

Why did you choose the University of Albany?

I chose UAlbany because I felt comfortable as soon as I stepped on campus. I felt like I belonged there. They have a beautiful campus, it’s a great academic intuition, and it’s close to home. UAlbany gives me the opportunity to make history by being the first person out of Harlem Lacrosse to play at a top 15 program in Division 1 lacrosse. By raising the bar it gives other kids hope that it is possible for them to do the same.

What's it like to be a student-athlete at Vermont Academy?

To be a student-athlete at Vermont Academy is to live and play with a blue-collar mentality. Nothing is given to us and everything is earned. I loved that about VA, because it reminds me of back home, at my old school.

Who would you like to thank for supporting you up to this point?

I would like to thank Coach Van, Coach Starsia, and Coach Censer for mentoring me through this process. I would also like to thank Coach Filler for believing in me as a student and helping to get me to VA. And a huge thank you to Harlem Lacrosse for putting a stick in my hand.

What have you learned at VA that you will apply at the next level?

Two things I learned at VA are consistency and timeliness that I believe will help me at the next level.

What does Vermont Academy mean to you?

VA means a lot to me because of how accepting everyone is of one another, which has allowed me to feel comfortable while learning how to grow in different aspects of my life. Also for giving me an opportunity to become a better student, making it possible for my dream to come true.

What does this opportunity represent for you and your family?

This opportunity is the first of its kind in my family and we are so happy that my nieces and cousins have something tangible to aspire to.
