College Coaches Flock to Williams Gymnasium

An early fog made it difficult to see the ski jump above the Vermont Academy campus, but if you were an early riser on September 9, 2019, you would have seen a parade of SUVs and cars pouring onto campus. Each vehicle transported coaching staff from some of the most prestigious college programs in the country.

Yale assistant coach Justin Simon said, “To have 25 coaches here at 7 AM… these kids are incredible.”

VA Coach Alex Popp focuses a significant part of each day cultivating a future for each of his players. These coaches’ invitationals are just one piece of a critical puzzle. As Coach Popp explained, “These opportunities mean everything to our students in the hoop program.”

On this particular late-summer morning, coaches from Dartmouth, Yale, Bucknell, Boston University, Jacksonville, Siena, Holy Cross, Mount St. Mary's, and more, made their way to Williams Gymnasium to watch and meet with players on the Wildcats. These events take place throughout the fall and are just one of the reasons why our small school has such a big reputation.
