Counting Down the Days: Kickoff to Graduation

As the calendar flipped to April and the last of the snow melted from our ’77 Snow Park, spring trimester coursework and activities filled the thoughts of our Wildcats. Spring is a short season on our hilltop but it is filled with traditions including our Earth Day celebration, Spring Arts Weekend, and specifically for our graduating class, the Kickoff to Graduation dinner.
On April 11, the Class of 2019 gathered in our Chivers Ski and Outdoor Education Center for dinner and to participate in some key decisions about their baccalaureate service as well as nominate two of their peers to serve as Class Representatives until their 5th reunion.

Dr. Zaccara, our head of school, opened the evening by sharing the letter she wrote to the class that will be published in the 2019 Wildcat Yearbook. She thanked them for welcoming her to VA and acknowledged the passion and dedication she has seen in each of them through their work in the classroom, on our playing fields, on the stage, and in the studio. She is looking forward to sharing their final weeks with them and celebrating with them at commencement on May 25.

The Class of 2019 advisors jovially participated as waitstaff. Many have been with their advisees for multiple years. As they brought out the dessert of strawberry shortcake, the class had the chance to weigh in on some key decisions including nominating a faculty member to receive the Barbara B. Sweet Award. This award is presented to that full-time faculty or staff member within the Vermont Academy community who has served as an exemplary teacher, coach, advisor, dorm parent, and role model. The recipient of this award will have touched and significantly influenced the lives of all community members in all aspects of life here at Vermont Academy. Additional discussion took place at each table as the class thoughtfully nominated a faculty member to speak on their behalf at the baccalaureate service held Friday evening before commencement.

The evening concluded as each class member departed by ringing the bell. This bell only rings for two occasions:  to signal the start of Mountain Day in the fall and as part of the countdown to commencement in the spring. The members of the Class of 2019 have only a little over a month left as students on our hilltop. We will savor this time with them as well as look forward to welcoming them home to our hilltop in the future.
