VA Snowboarders Open the 2019 Race Season

John Kelly
The Varsity Snowboard Team travelled across Rt 11 to Guilford New Hampshire for our first competition of the season. A giant slalom race hosted by Brewster Academy at Guntock Mountain. The team has been working hard at the VA and Okemo slopes to prepare for these tests. In the girls race Lucy Saunders put two clean fast runs together and land herself on the podium in third. On the boys side veteran rider Matt Bartelli '19, strapped on his race board and flew to a solid 5th place result. Close behind Matt, in his first snowboard race, was local mt bike legend, Maurice Day '21, riding to a solid 9th place result. Samson Orlinsky '20 rode amazingly well considering his board was virtually edgeless. Samson finished in 12th. Rookie team member Logan McAllister '20 showed his Big Sky bred skills and rode into 21st. Mark Hansen '19 had a solid first run but on the 2nd had a tough time holding his race line. Mark stuck with it and finished 35th. The boys team culminated for a third place team result on this day behind Holderness and Brewster. We look forward to traveling back to Gunstock next week for our 2nd race of the season. Come out and witness the action!
