VA Students and Faculty Take Part in Source to Sea Cleanup

On Saturday morning, September 29, Vermont Academy students Edward Ahn ’20, Jake Curtis ’19, Lucy Saunders ’19, Makenzie Goldman ’19 and Evan Zorman ’20 joined faculty members Christine Armiger and Evie Lovett and thousands of other volunteers across Connecticut, Massachusetts, Vermont, and New Hampshire in the Connecticut River Conservancy’s Source to Sea Cleanup. Fortified by cider donuts and sunny skies, students and faculty spent the morning picking up trash at the confluence of the Saxtons River and Connecticut River in Bellows Falls—and taking photos of the beautiful site and the not-so-beautiful trash. The group gathered over 15 pounds of trash and recycling, including 50 glass bottles and aluminum cans and 40 to 50 fast food wrappers

Students’ observations:

“Rivers serve as the veins and arteries of our nation, and just as we treat our hearts with respect, we should do the same with our waterways.”
—Evan Zorman

“Our environment is changing at an alarming rate, and everyone needs to take action and do their part to help clean up. Even the little things we do make a difference.”
—Lucy Saunders

“The Connecticut River is one of our most beautiful natural features. The trash polluting its banks do the historical waterway a grave injustice.”
—Jake Curtis

“The beautiful view at the end of the trail made the heavy trash bags in our hands worth it.”
—Makenzie Goldman
