What is Chile?

By Miranda Fuller ’19
As I was growing up and became more aware of my surroundings and events that were shaping our world, I began to question what it means to live in America.
Recently, my desire to travel has become a need. I want to look at this planet through a wider lens, one that encompasses multiple cultures, voice, and opinions. I made my first journey to South America in the fall of eighth grade and have continued to be an avid explorer ever since.

Studying and living in Chile for eight weeks through Vermont Academy’s Global Programs is my third adventure. Even at the beginning of my experience here, I already recognize the similar, friendly vibes that seem to saturate this continent’s cultured soil. Chile is different from Ecuador and Peru in that it has a sense of tough exterior, however it is also blooming with life and stunning beauty. The air in the forests is crisp and fresh; a nice change from the cities of America, and the sun is always the only thing in the daylight sky.

I find that there is a feeling of welcome here that is different from many other places I’ve been. If I’m greeting someone, or simply acknowledging a friend or family member, there is always a kiss on the cheek. It may seem intrusive to someone who comes form a place where a kiss is so taboo, but if you refuse to embrace the culture and customs, then you’re refusing the experience. It’s not all about going to see what a place has to offer; it is being open to the world and letting it sink in. Chile already feels a little like home, but just enough so that I have room to continue to grow and explore.

ABOUT VERMONT ACADEMY GLOBAL PROGRAMS
As part of Vermont Academy Global Programs, some of our faculty and students are in San Clemente, Chile for two months of classes and living with host families. Participating in this once in a lifetime experience are science teacher and director of outdoor programs, Nate Williams, and students Sueann Barsh '17, Calvin Dines '18, Miranda Fuller '19, Paul Jensen '17, Sam Kendrick '19, Jordan Savad '18, and Patrick Starkey '19. The world travelers will be joined in Chile by one of VA's Global Programs associates Sergio Vilarino. Students will continue their VA course work remotely, while also studying location-based topics including Chilean ecology and Latin American literature. The group will also participate in two, weeklong treks into Chilean national parks where they will develop leadership skills and experience the beauty and majesty of Chile. Students will be able to reflect and chronicle their growth, perspective, and global citizenship in an on-line portfolio throughout their 8-week experience. Here, they will share their work, reflections, and achievements. Best of luck to the group as they set off on this adventure! Vermont Academy also offers global programs in Spain and China.
