Vermont Academy is once again partnering with six fellow independent schools in northern New England to host an in-person gathering in Boston at The Roxbury Latin School's Bernstein Tea Room in Boston on Wednesday, March 29.

Hear from keynote speaker, Tom Grilk, the former president and CEO of the Boston Athletic Association. Be sure to submit your questions for Tom when you register!

Tom's remarks will be followed by breakout discussions with alumni volunteers from each school facilitating conversations among peers in their industries.

    Keynote Speaker: Tom Grilk, Retired President and CEO at the Boston Athletic Association
    Tom Grilk is the former CEO of the Boston Athletic Association, which conducts the Boston Marathon. In 1987 Tom began his work with the B.A.A.’s Board of Governors, and served as President of the board from 2003–2010. He became Executive Director in 2011 and later Chief Executive Officer in 2016, holding that position until his retirement in April 2022.

    During his tenure, he worked with the B.A.A. Board and staff to strengthen the B.A.A. as an organization, especially from a managerial perspective. He helped shape the short and long-term development across all areas of the B.A.A.’s activity: the conduct of athletic events, the operation of community service initiatives, and the training and development of athletes. 

    In addition to his duties as Chief Executive Officer, Tom served as the marathon’s finish line announcer from 1979 through 2013, and he is a former competitor, having run a personal best in the marathon of 2:49:03 in 1978 and a personal best at Boston of 2:54 that same year.

    He practiced corporate and business law over many years in and around Boston, both with the Boston law firm Hale and Dorr and serving as counsel and general counsel to several well-known companies in the information technology and semiconductor fields, including Digital Equipment Corporation, Teradyne, Inc. and Brooks Automation, Inc. As a lawyer, he worked in the fields of securities law, M&A transactions, corporate governance, compliance, dispute resolution, competition law, commercial law, and intellectual property. 

    Born in nearby Wakefield, Massachusetts, Tom currently resides in Lynnfield, Massachusetts with his wife Nancy. From 1984 to 1987, the couple lived in Tokyo, Japan. He is a graduate of Cornell University and received his Juris Doctor degree from the University of Michigan Law School.

    Dan Dougherty '83 | Vermont Academy | Founder, Friends for Financial Wellness
    Dan has built a career aligning technology to better business outcomes for the executives he works to support. He is the founder of Friends for Financial Wellness, an executive networking group of CXO bankers. The guiding principle of this group is: “Peers working together for camaraderie, community, connection, and collaboration to guide our users to financial security; giving people the confidence and choice to control their financial health."

    Dan has founded two firms to improve networking and communications: Team App (Acquired by Slack Sports) and KeynectUp (Acquired by Aerogami) and he enjoys working with people to understand their “Why?” and how his network can help them achieve their goals. Most recently Dan was an Enterprise Growth Executive with MX Technologies where he delivered on the company mission: To empower the world to be financially strong. Currently, Dan is in search of a new role and would appreciate referrals to technology firms that can impact the financial wellness of citizens all around us.
     
    Dan is a graduate of Skidmore College and lives in Natick, MA his wife, Lauren, and their three children: Mary, Jed, and Luke. Jed is a Roxbury Latin boy (Class of 2024) and as the RL Class II parent representative, Dan helped us to coordinate this meeting location.

    Amie Crawford '00 | Proctor Academy | SVP of Client Services, 3Q/DEPT
    Amie Crawford has 15 years of experience in digital marketing and is currently an SVP of Client Services at 3Q/DEPT where she oversees client-facing teams and drives account plans and relationships for 3Q’s clients, while also serving as an advisor, coach, and mentor to digital marketing professionals on the team. Amie is responsible for 3Q’s client retention, client and employee NPS, and revenue per employee. She also identifies opportunities to grow the business, streamline operations, and improve the client delivery organization, including building the right processes to help the company scale efficiently and creating new staffing models. Prior to joining 3Q/DEPT, Amie worked at iProspect for nearly 14 years where she held various roles across, client services, new business, strategy & comms planning. A former Division 1 field hockey athlete, Amie is the mother of two amazing daughters, a strong DEIB advocate, and earned a Bachelor of Science in Marketing from Providence College.

    Jack Dawley '80 | Holderness School | President and CEO of Northland Residential Corporation
    Jack Dawley has been associated with Northland since 1985. As a principal of Northland Residential Corporation, he was named CEO in 2010. He holds a Master of Science degree in Real Estate from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His experience in residential construction and project management has been celebrated throughout his tenure with Northland. Due to his vision, forecasting abilities, and permitting acumen, the firm has consistently identified and transformed select acquisitions into award-winning neighborhoods.

    Bianca Lora '13 | The White Mountain School | ACLU of Massachusetts, Communications and Event Coordinator
    Bianca Lora is a first-generation American who was raised in New York City and is the daughter of immigrants from the Dominican Republic. Bianca is a  graduate of St. John's College in Annapolis, MD, and holds a Masters in Social Work from the Silberman School of Social Work in New York City. Currently, Bianca works at the ACLU of Massachusetts as the communications and event coordinator. After serving as the senior legislative assistant to Montgomery County Maryland Council Vice President Evan Glass. In the role, she was the office lead for a wide array of events and managed the Councilmember's social justice legislative portfolio. Prior to that, she was an organizer at SEIU, mobilizing adjunct professors to improve their working conditions. Bianca has also worked for the Office of the Public Advocate in New York City and as the development assistant at the Federation of Protestant Welfare Workers (FPWA).

    Scott McCarty '04 | Dublin School | Senior Director, Business Enablement Strategy at UnitedHealth Group
    Scott McCarty is a problem solver with experience leading complex operational and strategic initiatives. He has been fortunate to partner with payers, providers, pharmaceutical, state governments, and digital health startups to drive strategy and strategic change initiatives to deliver value and positive ROI for clients. With experience in management consulting, strategy, project delivery, and analysis/problem-solving – Scott has managed initiatives commissioned by leaders and led teams leveraging my business judgment and management, problem-solving, communication, and analytical skills. He has worked and led teams to immerse themselves in data collection, draw insights, and then develop compelling stories and recommendations for leadership buy-in then structure and execute operational and strategic initiatives to completion with cross-functional, global teams. Working together, they've saved clients money, improved customer experiences, deployed new digital health products, and developed new public/private partnerships between payers, providers, state governments, and digital product teams. Scott believes healthcare is constantly changing and it is a field that is challenging, fun, and has a positive impact on people's lives.

    Zack Hallock '13 | Kimball Union Academy | Senior Energy Services Advisor at Competitive Energy Services
    Zack Hallock joined Competitive Energy Services, LLC (CES) in January of 2019 as an energy services advisor and was promoted to senior energy services advisor in 2022. Prior to CES, Zack worked with major utilities on large-scale transmission and midstream operations to provide appropriate staffing services. Currently, Zack closely advises demand-side management and energy procurement strategies, budgeting, variance tracking, and various forms of renewables integration into an energy portfolio. He has a B.A. in Economics and Environmental Studies from St. Lawrence University and is also a LEED Green Associate.
