I look forward to working with you -- our students, parents, faculty, staff, and alumni -- throughout the 2016-17 school year.
I first set foot on Vermont Academy’s campus 43 years ago where I taught and coached for several years. Later, I served on the Board of Trustees for a dozen years. At other points in my career, I was Head of the Upper School at Hawaii Preparatory Academy, Vice President of Development and Alumni Relations at Dartmouth College, and Vice President for University Relations at Alfred University. Throughout my career, however, Vermont Academy has always held a special place in my heart.
Nestled at the base of the Green Mountains, and spanning 450 acres of woods, ponds, trails, and a ski hill, Vermont Academy is often described by alumni as “magical.” Our location, our teachers, and our programming support each student in creating the best environment to be curious, to form and test ideas, and to make cross-disciplinary connections. Along the way, they form friendships with peers and mentors that often carry meaning throughout their lifetime.
If you’re not familiar with Vermont Academy, we believe that many paths to success may be discovered here. Through our distinctive My Action Plan for Success (MAPS) Program, students are encouraged by their advisors to reflect on strengths and challenges, think about their future, and set and achieve goals. Our students’ success proves that MAPS provides an excellent foundation to get them thinking about their future, deciding what’s important to them personally, and developing actions steps toward achieving personal success.
Vermont Academy provides students with countless ways to learn and grow through participation. Outside of classroom challenges, students are encouraged to stretch their comfort zone and try new sports, artistic pursuits, and theater. Further, they may choose to run for student government; study for a trimester in China, Chile, or Spain; or hike the Long Trail. Many students do all of these things on their educational journey!
I encourage you to visit us and be welcomed into our community. Don’t be surprised if by the end we feel like old friends!
