The first competition of the season for the Vermont Academy Snowboard Team was a Giant Slalom race at Okemo Mountain hosted by VA. 85 racers from 7 Lakes Region schools made the trip on an ideal day for racing on stellar packed powder conditions. In the girls' race, Katy Brennan blitzed both of her runs and finished 2nd on the long challenging course. Her teammate MacKenzie Curtis had a solid first run, but slid out in the second run. She recovered quickly to finish in 7th.
In the boys' race, Flyin' Mike Capasse continued his Lakes Region race domination with a win. That result gives him victories in 4 out of the last 5 Lakes Region Giant Slaloms, dating back to the beginning of the 14/15 season. Mike was followed closely by freshman sensation Jay Harris in 3rd. Our next finisher was Henry Hothschild in a solid 16th place. Danny Houder was 18th, Mason Schlosser was impressive in 21st, Mason Gilbey 24th. Our rookie boys' squad put some solid runs in on the fast course and all received numbers, not letters, i.e. times, not DSQ or DNF. Marco Maestri was 25th, Cole Steel 26th, Matt Bartelli 48th, and Jeronimo MartinSaenz in 51st. It's good to have the season rolling with some nice snow to rip on. Next Wednesday we travel to Mount Sunapee for a slopestyle competition hosted by Cardigan Mountain School.
