Bill Chapman '67 Honored with the Florence R. Sabin Class of 1889 Distinguished Alumni Award

The Vermont Academy Alumni Association honors its most distinguished alumni with the Florence R. Sabin Class of 1889 Distinguished Alumni Award, and this year’s honoree is Dr. William “Bill” R. Chapman ’67. Bill will be honored during Reunion on Saturday, June 4 at 2 p.m.
Bill’s professional accomplishments in the fields of historic preservation, Asia Pacific architecture, and architectural history are exemplary. A four-time Fulbright Scholar, interim dean of the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa School of Architecture, author of numerous papers, and recipient of Columbia University’s 2020 Preservation Alumni Leadership Award, Bill’s work focuses on educating “students and the public about historic sites and monuments in Southeast Asia. Chapman’s research spans the fields of anthropology, archaeology and architectural history.”

Vermont Academy Alumni Association President Tom Oxholm ’82 noted that Bill’s “exemplary work in the fields of historic preservation, Asia Pacific architecture, and architectural history are worthy of recognition as a recipient of the Sabin award.”

Established in 1985 by the Vermont Academy Alumni Association, the Florence R. Sabin Class of 1889 Distinguished Alumni Award recognizes and honors Vermont Academy alumni who, through their diligence and efforts, have used the basic academic and life skills acquired at the Academy to achieve significant success in their professional careers or have made outstanding contributions in community involvement thereby bringing honor to themselves and to Vermont Academy.
