Vermont Academy’s educational philosophy is rooted in four historical values of ingenuity, independence, community, and love of the land.

These values create the underpinnings of what we call The Vermont Academy Way, and they represent the framework that shapes the evolution of teaching and learning at Vermont Academy.

Vermont Academy awards non-need-based merit scholarships connected to each of the four values: ingenuity, independence, community, and love of the land. These scholarships are for incoming students who demonstrate promise or passion in one of these areas.

Each category awards a boarding recipient $20,000 in merit scholarship per year and a day recipient $5,000 in merit scholarship per year. Scholarships are renewable for each year a student is enrolled and is in good academic and community standing. Each category will award two total scholarships; one for day and one for boarding. Applicants have the creative freedom to determine how they fit the available categories.

If you are interested in applying for a Vermont Academy Way Scholarship, please go through the standard application process.

The Ingenuity Scholarship
Creativity and problem-solving run core to this value. Students can demonstrate ingenuity in a variety of ways and disciplines, including but not limited to: the arts, coding, robotics, science and technology, independent learning projects.

The Independence Scholarship
Whether independent learning or self-advocacy, independence is essential in boarding school life and learning at Vermont Academy. Students who have exercised independence by starting a business, advocating for themselves, stepping into a leadership role, or have taken a risk that has resulted in growth or learning should apply for this scholarship.

The Community Scholarship
Our community is a grounding, intentional force. Students will feel a sense of belonging in a close-knit community while also understanding the impact of their actions in school and a wider global community. Students who have demonstrated leadership within their community, have a passion for community service or help others are encouraged to apply.

The Love of the Land Scholarship
Tucked in the safety of a small Vermont village on a 450-acre campus, students are never far from the natural environment around them. From ski hills and rivers to biking and hiking trails, our students' outdoor opportunities are endless. Demonstrated passion for the outdoors or active engagement in sustainability is a great way to show commitment to this value.

The Alumni Merit Scholarship

For students referred by Vermont Academy Alumni only.

Vermont Academy Alumni can refer an extended family member or friend for admission to the school. Qualified boarding applicants will receive a $10,000 merit scholarship that is applied for the duration of enrollment at Vermont Academy. The day student scholarship amount is $2,500.

The referring alumna/alumnus must write a letter of recommendation, submitted to the admissions office at admissions@vermontacademy.org.
