During pre-season, the team -- a very young team, composed mostly of freshmen, sophomores and juniors -- met and established a goal: we want to build this program and put "VA cross country on the map." Well, that we did, but we did a whole lot more, too. We began the season with our first invitational at KUA, where we earned second place. We concluded the season the same way, earning a 2nd place finish at the Lakes Region Championship at Holderness. 6 of our top 7 runners are returning next year, and we have a host of younger runners who have the potential to step up, too. Each of our top runners improved their times from beginning to end by an average of 1.5 minutes.

Tough Competition at NMH

The boys' cross country team met its match at NMH on Saturday, its most competitive meet of the season so far. We competed against very experienced teams from Loomis, NMH, Exeter, and Cushing, and placed sixth out of eight teams. (Georgi Funtarov, in particular, after having just run on Wednesday at Cardigan, had to step in and run again on Saturday due to injuries and a scant roster. He beat his PR by ten seconds and placed 1st among VA runners. His ceiling seems endless.) However, this was only our second meet, and there's a lot of season left, so we are going to use this as a learning process as we return to work tomorrow with an 8-mile run to kick the week off. On Wednesday, we will resume our league competition at New Hampton against other Lakes Region schools.

The cross country team competed at Cardigan yesterday and had a very successful day. Half of the team will go to NMH on Saturday, but the other half, most of whom ran their first-ever race on Wednesday, was a force to reckon with. In particular, Georgi Funtarov, who got 5th place overall for the boys, ran a 19:32; and on the girls' side, Monique Yingling earned 2nd place and Sarah Nelb 6th. Great job, everyone. 5. The Cross Country team had its first race on Wednesday at KUA against 10 other teams from the Northeast. We're a very young and inexperienced team, but you would never have been able to tell from our results. In a boys' race that featured over 100 runners, our top 5 finished in the first 33 places, and all 8 Wildcats placed under 70th place. And in a girls' race that featured over 50 runners, our two racers finished 8th and 11th place. Congratulations to the Wildcats. This is not to be taken lightly in a season in which all of these runners have been running about 30 miles a week, well ahead of their rivals. It would have been easy to use soreness and tiredness as excuses, but the XC squad this year refused to do just that. It looks to be a very promising season. Next week we have a dual meet on Wednesday and a large Invite on Saturday at NMH.

Welcome to Cross Country at Vermont Academy for the Fall of 2012. We've a very young team this year, which has generated a lot of excitement among the group in that the future looks good for a growing program. However, despite being young, the VA squad is talented. We've logged 25-30 miles a week for the past 2 weeks and will continue to expand our base mileage before we start the anaerobic workouts in a couple of weeks. Our first meet is on Wednesday against KUA. Stay tuned...
