Rock Climbing

Rock Climbing is a spring sport that meets throughout the months of April and May. We train students to be confident, strong and smart climbers by preparing them with skills that they can use in the safe enjoyment of this sport in college and beyond.  Vermont Academy provides harnesses, climbing shoes, and helmets for every student. Our climbing wall is located in the gymnasium along with several high ropes course elements. Each student involved in this program is encouraged to develop their climbing technique at their own pace. Coaches also teach students proper belay and rappel techniques and how so set anchors for sport climbing. Field trips include several rock outcrops in Vermont and New Hampshire and an overnight climbing/backpacking trip.

This past weekend the Vermont Academy Rock Climbing team journeyed on a bearing of North East to Rumney, New Hampshire. The sport climbing at Rumney is world renowned and there are routes for all skill levels.

We arrived at the crag around 3pm on Saturday and climbed until about 7pm. The rock is beautiful at Rumney, especially due to the great contrast between all the green life brought on by the rains of spring and the grey black rock. Still even with all my ooooing and ahhhhing Mrs. Armiger and Dave Persha articulated it looked like shist. I was quite confused by these statements due to their apparent excitement.

That evening we enjoyed a campfire, some fat franks sausages, and plenty of laughs. Emma Roos brought the biggest Marshmallows I have ever seen and Dave tempted the fates by filling his mouth to capacity with the pillow sized treats. This experiment was made even more dangerous due to some hilarious stories told by Charlotte Murphy (guess you had to be there---- NEXT TIME!). After a long day of climbing, eating, and laughing it was time for bed. Some of the crew decided to sleep out and enjoy a cowboy night, with only the stars taking the space between the dreamer and the heavens.

The next morning the group fueled up with coffee, BACON, and fresh VA eggs. By around 10am we were on the road heading to the crag for a full morning of shredding the gnar! Challenge was provided to all, and we left the crag around the same time we had arrived the previous day- 3pm. With tired bodies, we happily laughed our way to the cars as we prepared ourselves for the hour and forty five minute drive home.

While this was an amazing trip for all those involved, it also served as a great exploratory trip. The climbing at Rumney is easily accessible and trips to its crags could very well become a Sunday activity for cool kids. Hopefully we will see you out there!
