Wildcats open 2011 Season
The VA Cross Country team traveled to Dublin School for the first official race of the 2011 season. The boys were led by senior Scott Poulton who broke the 20 minute mark on a very challenging course. Poulton was followed by Freshman Cam Hubbard and Desmond Holzman-Hanson. Senior Captain Andrew Zeigler had a strong showing and finished #4 for VA. Other finishers included Robbie Roacher and Captain Robert Parent.
The Wildcats will spend the rest of the week preparing for the opening meet of the Lakes Region season next Wed at Cardigan Mtn. School.

2011 Team looks to improve
The 2011 Vermont Academy Cross Country team includes some new faces that should help the team as they prepare to compete for the Lakes Region Championship. Freshman John Scoby has had a strong pre season logging over 30 miles a week. He will be one of the top runners in the Lakes Region and will be a contender for All New England status at the NEPSAC Championships in November. Seniors Scott Poulton and Austin Wharry have come back in excellent shape and should contend for a top 5 spot on the team. Other newcomers that will add to the depth of the team are Bobby Ronachar, Will Datilio and Steve Tabor. A couple of Freshman that will help the team immediately are Cam Hubbard and Des Holzman-Hanson. The team will be led by captains Andrew Zeigler and Robert Parent.
The girls team is led by Maddie Casey. She brings real enthusiasm to each practice. Maddie will be the sole girl on the VA team this fall.
The team will be ready for their first Lakes Region group meet on Sept 28 at Cardigan Mtn School.

Vermont Academy at New England Div IV Championships
A group of Varsity athletes was rewarded with a great trip to the New England Div IV Championships in Bath, Maine. The team left after school on Friday and spent the night in Durham, NH. The team enjoyed a stroll down Main Street and found a great Sushi restaurant for a pre-race meal. After a great breakfast the team traveled up Route 95 to the beautiful coastal Maine town of Bath. The Hyde School hosted the meet this year on a spectacular fall day.
The boy's had four finishers which prevented them from having a team score. Senior Captain, Charlie Vrettos ran his last race for VA well. He finished with a time of 21.08. Charlie was followed by PG Joe Arcieri who finished the challenging course with a time of 21.30. Sophomore Robert Parent (24.03) and Ethan Yang (26.04) also ran well for the Wildcats.
The girl's were led by Sophomore Mikaela Paluszek who finished with a time of 24.48. The girl's also had strong showings from Ayaka Izumi (27.19) and Grace Zhang (29.43).
The team stopped in Durham, NH on the way home and saw the University of New Hampshire Wildcats battle the University of Massachusetts Minutemen in an exciting Hockey East contest. For many of the runners it was the first hockey game they attended. The tired team arrived back in Saxtons River at midnight.

Paluszek shines at Lakes Region Championship
Sophomore Mikaela Paluszek ran a strong race for the Wildcats at Proctor Academy on Wed, November 3. Mikaela finished 8th with a time of 25.45. Mikaela has made steady progress throughout the year and has been a leader of the girl's team. Ayaka Izumi and Grace Zhang continued to improve.
The boy's were led by senior captain Charlie Vrettos who finished in 34th place with a time of 22.48. Robert Parent and Sean Kim had strong showings. Fred Farmer and Andrew Zeigler rounded out the top five for the boy's.
The team finishes out the season at the NEPSTA DIV 4 Championships on Nov 13 at Hyde School in Bath Maine.

Vermont Academy at Shaler Invitational
The boy's and girl's Cross Country team traveled to Williston Northampton School on Saturday to participate at the Shaler Invitational. Vermont Academy runners continue to see their hard work pay off as their times continue to improve each week.
The girl's were led by Sophomore Mikaela Paluszek who finished with a time of 23.22. Ayaka Izumi (25.45) and Grace Zhang (26.44) ran their personal best times of the season.
The boy's were led by Senior Captain Charlie Vrettos (20.46). Sophomore Robert Parent ran well with a season best time of 22.38. Jordan Arzi, Ethan Wang and Kolin Handler rounded out the top five for the Wildcats.
Vermont Academy returns to action on Wed at the Lakes Region Championships hosted by Proctor Academy.

Vermont Acadey has strong showing at Holderness Meet
The boy's and girl's Cross Country team traveled to Holderness on Wed October 27 for the final regular season Lakes Region meet. Mikaela Paluszek had the strongest individual performance with a fourth place finish in the girl's race. Mikaela has led the girl's this year by working hard at every practice. Other strong performances for the girl's were Ayaka Izumi and Grace Zhang.
The boy's were led by Sophomore Robert Parent who continues to improve. Robert was followed by Ethan Wang, Kolin Handler and Andrew Zeigler. Fred Farmer and Jonas Lee also ran well for the Wildcats.
The team returns to action on Saturday at the competitive Shaler Invitational at Williston Northampton School.

Vermont Academy improves at Brewster Meet
The Vermont Academy Cross Country team traveled to Wolfeboro, NH on a beautiful fall day to compete in the second Lakes Region group meet of the season. It was clear that the miles of training the team is putting in, is beginning to pay off.
The boys were led by senior Joe Arceri who finished in 16th place with a time of 21.24. Joe was followed by senior captain Charlie Vretos who finished in 22nd place with a time of 21.52. Senior Sejunk Kim had an outstanding race and finished in 35th place. Sophomores Robert Parent and Andrew Zeigler rounded out the top 5 for VA.
The girls were led by Sophomore Mikaela Paluszek who finihsed in 8th place with a time of 25.57. Ayaka Izumi had a strong race and finished in 19th place. Other VA finishers were Grace Zhang, Ellie Van der Vord and Taylor Greene.
The team hosts Dublin in a dual meet on Wed October 20.

Vermont Academy hosts Lakes Region opener
Over 110 athletes took on the challenging XC course on an unseasonably warm late September day. Ten Lakes Region schools traveled to Saxtons River for the meet.
The Vermont Academy boys were led by PG Joe Arcieri who finished in 17th place with a time of 22.46. Arcieri was followed by senior captain Charlie Vrettos (23rd). Robert Parent, Sejung Kim and Andrew Ziegler rounded out the top 5 for the Wildcats. This young team continues to work hard and each runner has shown tremendous improvement in the early going.
The girls were led by Soph Mikaela Paluszek who finished in 7th place. Senior Grace Zhang also had a strong race. Injuries prevented several runners from competing yesterday.

CROSS COUNTRY OPENER AT DUBLIN The boys and girls Cross Country team kicked off the 2010 season at Dublin School. The boys were led by senior Joe Arcieri who finished 2nd overall with a time of 19.18. Joe was followed by senior captain Charlie Vrettos and senior Sean Kim. Rounding out the top 5 for VA were Junior Jordan Arzi and Sophomore Robert Parent.
On the girls side Sophomore Kitt Sikes won the girls division with a time of 22.38. Kitt looked strong in her first race of the year. Kitt was followed by Grace Zhang, Ayaka Izumi and senior captain Meredith Anderson.
