Vermont Academy Visual Arts
In keeping with the vibrant arts options at Vermont Academy, we believe that every student should have the opportunity to try new experiences and explore their own potential. The arts are integrated into our lifestyle with studios located throughout our campus. Display cases and galleries, for both student and professional work, decorate our halls and buildings. Artwork by alumni/ae can be found throughout the school. Our Arts Department offers field trips to a wide range of museums, galleries and historical sites. From the Rockingham Meeting house to New York City; from Art History to Photography, we bring the arts to life. Visiting artists add to that and help enlarge the students' understanding of the artistic process and their own capabilities.
Classes covering drawing, painting, printmaking and sculptural options are held in our sunny atelier next to the Lucy Gymnasium. Pottery students have their own space below our Learning Center with six potter’s wheels and a professional-sized gas reduction kiln. Digital photography, computer graphic design, and filmmaking meet in our Computer Studio in Fuller Hall, our main classroom building. The studio by the Lucy Gymnasium not only provides space for all of our studio classes but also offers basic art supplies for students wishing to come up and work on a poster for class or make a card to send home.
For seniors who are pursuing the highest levels of art, our Advanced Art class focuses on portfolio development and understanding Art School options. Students travel to Portfolio Day in either Hartford or Boston and attend presentations by visiting colleges. Students are also encouraged to enter juried competitions. Each spring, the school sponsors a competition open to all seniors for an art purchase for our permanent alumni collection, with a $250 prize going to the winning student.
