Vermont Academy's Learning Center & the Learning Skills Program

"Each member of the Vermont Academy community will grow and develop, and is given the opportunity to do so here."
Vermont Academy Core Belief

The Vermont Academy Learning Center is a dynamic combination of professionals and services whose primary goal is to support the academic development of VA students.

To say that all students learn differently is not a judgment of ability or potential, but an acknowledgement that many bright young men and women – when introduced to academic coaching, content-specific tutoring, and the appropriate accommodations – can reach a level of personal achievement that they were not previously able to attain or perhaps did not think possible to attain.

A Fresh Perspective
Precisely because there exists more than one style of learning, we, as educators, must be flexible and varied in the ways we teach. The Vermont Academy Learning Center teachers are continually taking part in professional development workshops in progressive areas such as ADHD Coaching, Universal Design for Instruction and Learning, and the latest theories on the role of neuro-science in educational development.

What Our Parents Say

"Learning Skills has helped my daughter work toward her potential in the most positive and inclusive atmosphere -- making her feel very much part of VA.  At VA, Learning Skills is not in any way an annex for kids who learn differently -- it is part of the mainstream fabric of the school and helps all kids who need its services to feel included, accepted and successful!"

"Vermont Academy's learning skills has been the turning point for our daughter. The time management skills she has developed as well as the wonderful tutoring she has received have brought her to honors, and a new level of self confidence. The personal relationships she has developed with the team has made the VA experience a life structuring experience."

"When my son started at Vermont Academy as a repeat junior, he was quite determined that he did not need the help of the Learning Skills Department. He did . . . I knew, the educators from the Learning Skills Department knew, the Academy knew . . . and in a respectful, supportive, nurturing and non-threatening way over my son's two years at Vermont Academy the skilled and caring educators in VA's Learning Skills Department helped him learn study skills to compensate for his learning challenges, to grow, to develop confidence, to become self-aware, and to build his self-esteem."
